This painting depicts the busy, eclectic vibe of the 5 Points area. The infamous five points light can be seen in the center of the painting with the intersection shown from above. The background looks like a hive and represents the pavers used for the sidewalks throughout the Riverside area. The shoes and their occupants represent the diversity of the people that inhabit these streets.
In the 1920’s, Five Points began as a commercial district catering to the rapidly growing residential areas surrounding it. Although officially a part of the Riverside-Avondale Historic District, Five Points has evolved into one of Jacksonville’s most vibrant urban core districts in its own right.
In 2021, the area is seeing major changes, the Five Points round-about is being redesigned and the light has been removed. This painting captures the area prior to the reconstruction. Many of the businesses are gone and new ones have popped up. I will miss some of them very much and that is why this pieces is a departure from my usual "Vintage Florida" design. This vibrant area needed to be portrayed slightly different, a more abstracted representation of the area with all of the signs, streets, sidewalks and shoes.
