Four Miles to Citra
“Four Miles to Citra” is the first painting in a Series called, “Vintage Florida”. The original painting is a 22X28 acrylic on canvas and was painted in 2020. If you have ever traveled south on 301 from North Florida, you’ve gone past the Orange Shop and all the signs that promise a real citrus treat. Since I was a child traveling from Kentucky to Florida to visit my Grandparents, certain roadside vendors just screamed, “You are in Florida”!
The Orange Shop opened in 1936. Before World War II, people started traveling down to Florida on U.S. Highway 301, passing through the small village of Citra - long famous for the citrus that grew there. Citrus had been growing commercially in their grove since the Civil War, so it just seemed natural when they offered it to travelers so they could take a little "Florida Sunshine" to remind them of their trip. The Shop has been open for business every fruit season since then. The owners are third-generation citrus growers and the entire Town of Citra supports the business, and many have been working at The Orange Shop for decades.
As a long-time, Floridian; I am always happy to see it’s only Four Miles to Citra and The Orange Shop!
